Just finished the Chapter 3 part 1 of Gita and found some interesting ideas..
When Arjun asks "Tell me one thing that will be the best for me?"
This is the answer he gets.. Right from the beginning of the world, there are always at-least 2 paths available to do something:
- Knowledge | for contemplative type people
- Action | Karma | for action oriented people
Either you have to work through the way to your goal or you realize how to get it done quicker.
Example -
If you want to go to a place, you can start walking and figure out the path - Action
Or you can first find out the path by reading or searching or asking - Knowledge
"But what's good for me? " - asks Arjun
- Shreyas - something which is good for me
- Preyas - something which may or may not be good for me but it is very pleasant
- The good and the pleasant come to a man and the thoughtful mind turns around them and distinguishes. The wise choose out the good from the pleasant, but the dull soul chooses the pleasant rather than the getting of his good and its having.
"But what if both Knowledge and Action doesn't attract me?"
Then there's a 3rd path
- Bhakti
- path for simple minded people
- For people who are neither knowledge seeker nor action oriented
It's the confusion of the paths that has caused the Society to give priority to sanyas
- Once considered highest achievement
- by just giving up action you don't become actionless
